Citizen of Nowhere

When you are an immigrant,
you cry in silence for the country where you grew up
When you are an immigrant,
you sorrow because friends and family are dying
and you could not say goodbye
When you are an immigrant,
you scream in pain because you buy new shoes
and people in your native country are walking barefoot.
When you are an immigrant,
you struggle with a new culture and language
and feel nostalgic for that place where you used to live.
When you are an immigrant,
you long for company,
but also bring happy memories back
about those days when you used to spend time
with family and friends in your country.
When you are an immigrant,
you get frustrated when you are looking for a job all day
and come back home late at night tired because you didn’t find any.
When you are an immigrant,
you suffer for all people back home
that don’t have a job and have to eat from the dumpster
before the garbage truck picks it up.
When you are an immigrant,
and become sick you get worried about the expensive bills
that you must pay for.
When you are an immigrant,
your heart breaks when you
see millions of people dying because they have no access to medicines
When you are an immigrant your heart burns
when your people spend hours with no power and no water
impeding them from taking care of simple things.
When you are an immigrant,
you become the child of no one
an invader in this new country
and a foreigner in your old country.

Hi, and welcome everyone to The Silly Project. I am Duvraska, a single mother of one, an immigrant from Venezuela.
I am a graduate student at the University of New York (MFA Creative Writing in Spanish). I am bilingual (English-Spanish) with a BS in Accounting and proficient in Microsoft Office.
I worked in auditing and administrative areas for several years, sharing experiences with amazing colleagues and improving abilities such as time management, attention to detail, precision, and organization. However, the last two years made me reevaluate my career.
Lance Armstrong once said, “If you ever get a second chance in life for something, you’ve got to go all the way.”
I am excited to enter the world of writing, pursue my dream, and build a new path. I believe that my experience and education make me a competitive candidate.
My management skills help me complete tasks with minimal supervision, work independently, and achieve the goals set by any organization. Additionally, I have an analytical and observational capacity that, together with motivation and a positive attitude, become my best set of skills to stay focused on solutions and not on problems.
I try to see the positive side in everything because, for me, failures are masked opportunities.
Whenever failure faces me, I do not say why me? Instead, I always ask myself what am I going to do about it?
