Poverty and pain
surrounding human beings
pushing them
to be brave
darkness descends
on innocent souls
anguish spreads
hostility and rage
there is nothing to lose
are you listening
their rumbling sounds?
that is not hunger
that is death
when garbage trucks
deliver their food
days come and go
no power no water no food
no jobs no money no hope
there is nothing to lose
wounded babies
before they are born
trauma and pain
are everywhere
morgues and hospitals
mean the same
in my country
darkness prevails
there is nothing left to lose
no one is safe
my soul is in pain
now my people
travel by foot
leaving their homes
testing their bravery
and wearing out their shoes
there is nothing left to lose
deep in the cold
or dark nights
on a cardboard on a bench
their fears find a place
there is nothing left to lose
at some point in the journey
their legs go numb
their chapped lips beg
for warm food
on their feet
blisters appear
on their backs
they are carrying pain
breaking their heart
but enduring their way
there is nothing left to lose
behind the illusion
that the road is safe
a cruel reality
remains
they are risking
the only thing
that they have left
their life
even so
there is nothing left to lose
they would give
their last gasp
to attain
what any human being
should have
they are seeing
what nobody else can
they are just hoping
to find light
at the other side
we the immigrants
mourn our family
our culture
our homeland
our language
our own selves
we the immigrant
grieve the life
we left behind
then
again and again
we the immigrants
have nothing more to lose
